Poplar Bluff warming shelter busy during frigid temperatures

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KFVS) - We have told you about several warming centers around the Heartland to help people during these dangerously cold temperatures.

One Heartland shelter says they are seeing dozens and dozens of people in need.

“We had a lot of our homeless and ones that were unable, you know, to keep their houses heated,” said Chris Kellums.

Organizers at The Bread Shed in Poplar Bluff say more than 75 people took advantage of the overnight warming shelter this week due to the cold, and about 100 people came in just to keep warm.

Director Chris Kellums says 14 people will be staying overnight at the shelter. Many of their belongings are still on their cots.

He says the Southeast Missouri Transportation Service provides rides to the shelter and then transports them to the daytime warming center at 7 a.m. the next day.

Kellums says it’s important they help continue to fill such an ongoing need in their community.

“To be able to do what we do to help our community and our homeless. It doesn’t matter if you’re homeless or not; you’re more than welcome here. That’s who we are. We just like to show the love of Jesus to everybody, and this is the way that we can help,” said Kellums.

He says they need blankets, sleeping bags, and monetary donations.

The Bread Shed will be open as an overnight shelter from 7 p.m.-7 a.m.
